How NOT to gain weight on vacation or during holidays? It is the question most of keep asking ourselves during holiday season. Going on vacation does not equal weight gain. Holidays do not equal weight gain either. Keep that in mind. Also vacation/holidays and diet do not belong in the same sentence. A lot of people say that all you need is discipline and some planning. But that is easier sad than done.
So, I decided to share some tips that have been very useful to me on my trips. Those tips also apply to holidays as well.
Make good choices for breakfast, gravitate towards fruit, oatmeal and protein. Do some research before you get to your destination and google the restaurants you want to visit. If the hotel you are staying at has a gym – use it. Or if you are staying at an apartment, book one with an equipped kitchen.
Exploring a new destination also includes trying out local food. If you know you are going to have a big dinner – have a smaller lunch. If you have a desert – skip wine, and vice versa. Choose what’s worth it, weather it is a piece of cake or a glass (or few) of wine
Walk everywhere, and I’m talking about EVERYWHERE. This does not only keep you slim and healthy, but you also get to see more of your destination. Use stairs rather than elevator. Now I see that being claustrophobic does have some advantages after all 😉 When we went to Graz a few weeks ago, not only did we walk around 10 km per day but we also climbed up all the Schloßberg stairs.
Keeping yourself hydrated is the key. Especially when you walk a lot. And sometimes we confuse thirst for being hungry and then we eat more. Drink water rather than juices.
Yes, splurge! But only occasionally. You certainly can have one splurgy meal as long as you eat healthy and balanced most of the time. But when you do splurge – enjoy it.
Do not stress yourself out! We all know that stress causes your cortisol levels go up, and when your cortisol levels are high our weight goes up as well.
I hope this helps and I wish you all happy holidays!
